HYDROTHERAPY - COLONIC IRRIGATION
What is colonic irrigation?
Colonic irrigation is an internal bath that helps cleanse the colon of poisons, gases, accumulated fecal matters and mucus deposits.
Such techniques were first recorded in 1500 B.C. and have been used in traditional and naturopathic medicine ever since.
Using sterilized equipment, filtered water is gently introduced into the rectum which progressively softens and expels fecal matters and compacted deposits.
Colonic irrigation is more effective then an enema, since the whole colon is treated and water is not purposely retained. It is best used as a complementary technique to other therapies. By improving elimination, the response to dietary, homeopathic, herbal, manipulative and other therapies is markedly improved.
Why colonic irrigation?
Poor elimination can lead to many chronic conditions; it is these very conditions that colonic irrigation can help:
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Colitis
- Spastic colon
- Diverticulitis
- Liver sluggishness
- Halitosis
- Headaches
- Flatulence
- Hemorrhoids
- Ache
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Abdominal bloating
- Asthma
- Allergies
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Lethargy
- Schizophrenia
It is also beneficial prior to and following barium enemas and during therapeutic fasting. Some complex conditions such as Crohn's disease, myalgic encephalomyelitis (M.E.) and intestinal condida are also helped by the detoxifying effect of colonic irrigation.
What is involved?
Under the supervision of a trained therapist, filtered water, au a carefully regulated temperature, is introduced under gentle gravitational pressure through the rectum into the colon. With specialized massage techniques, the water begins to soften and cleanse the colon of accumulated fecal matters and deposits which are piped away with the waste water. The therapist works progressively around the colon's structure, allowing water to alternately flow in and out.
The whole process takes about 35-45 minutes.
Herbal preparations may be used for some conditions, and colon implants of Lactobacillus acidophilus are given to ensure the normalization of the intestinal flora. The patient's modesty is preserved to the utmost during the process. Is any preparation required? No special measures are necessary prior to colonic irrigation, although results may be more rapidly achieved by following a colon cleansing program.
Is it safe?
Yes. Equipment is sterilized (or disposed) after each use using hospital-approves methods which kill all prevalent bacteria, viruses and fungi in minutes. Countless thousands of colonics have been given safely; the water pressure is very low, so there is no danger of bowel perforation and the water used is filtered. Unlike the regular usage of laxatives, colonic irrigation is not habit-forming and in fact improves the colon's muscle tone.
And the results...
Most people quickly experience improved mental clarity after a colonic irrigation. With their toxic load diminished and elimination improved, a grater feeling of well-being and lightness is felt.
Colonic irrigation brings obvious relief from bloating and constipation, toxic headaches, painful hemorrhoids and skin problems. In the long run, bowel disease risks are also diminished and nutrients are better absorbed-leading to improved health all around.
Who can benefit from colonics?
Essentially anyone with a condition aggravated or caused totally or partially by auto-toxicity, and where the resulting improved elimination helps healing. Most diets include mucus-forming foods like dairy products, eggs, sugar, flour and tofu, and even those people on relatively good diets and who have regular bowel movements, have old hardened accumulations of mucoid deposits which hinder proper elimination and need periodic cleansing.
How many treatments?
Depending upon the condition being treated, the individual and the initial results, anything between 6 to 12 treatments may be recommended, spread over 1 to 2 months. Deposits that took a lifetime to build up simply can not be eliminated with one or two irrigations!
Following that, it is a good idea to have a treatment every 6 months to maintain inner cleanliness and good elimination.
Benefits
- Elimination of toxins, purification of the liver, the blood and other organs of elimination;
- Improved digestion with a reduction of intestinal gases;
- Feeling of lightness and general well-being;
- The eyes will become clearer and brighter;
- Improved concentration and sleep patterns;
- Weight control and cellulite reduction.
It's good to know...
The digestive process
The colon or large intestine is an important part of the digestive system; some 5 feet in length and 21/2 inches in diameter, located at the end of the alimentary tract, in completes the digestive process and handles our food wastes and several other body wastes. It is normally populated by millions of friendly bacteria which assist in detoxifying waste, synthesize certain vitamins and help us guard against infection. These same bacteria make up about 40% of the weight of our fecal wastes.
The colon's structure is that of a smooth muscle and is broadly divided into 3 segments: the cecum and ascending colon, into which food wastes enter in a liquid state through the ileocecal valve, the transverse colon, where water, minerals and vitamins are reabsorbed, and the descending colon where mucus is secreted to coat the feces prior to defecation through the rectum and anus.
In healthy conditions, the bowel transit time, from eating to defecation, is 24 hours or less and bowel movement is at least once daily. In diseased conditions, poor digestion, yeast infection, spastic colon, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic constipation and diarrhea ate usually accompanied by auto-intoxication, literally "self-poisoning" - the reabsorbing of soluble wastes into the bloodstream - which increases the burden of the other eliminative organs, the kidneys, the skin and the lungs.
Chronic constipation can lead to further complications: diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, fissures, atonicity, spasticity, prolapsus, colitis and even bowel cancer, as well as chronic toxic conditions in the rest of the body, like the skin (e.g. acne and eczema), the cardiovascular and nervous systems and the liver. A properly functioning colon is a necessity for health, for, truly, "disease can begin in the colon". It has been said that colon dysfunctions can lead to 80% of all diseased states.
